In Mr. Johnson’s class, we had a chance to watch CNN news and take notes. There were many interesting topics that were covered, such as modern slavery, search for lost baby, accusations, and so on. However, one of the most interesting was about corrective rape.
The word ‘corrective rape’ gave me an impression that rape was practiced in some parts of word by men in order to correct women’s behaviors. As I searched for definition, it said, “a criminal practice first seen in South Africa, whereby lesbian women are raped by men, sometimes under supervision by members of their families or local communities, purportedly as a means of “curing” them of their homosexuality.”
This issue was far more serious than I had expected. The picture above is a woman Eudy Simelane, a member of the South Africa women’s national football team and a vocal LGBT-rights activist in South Africa. She was gang raped and murdered in KwaThema, Gauteng. Two of her four assailants were ultimately convicted.
A November 2008 report by the NGO ActionAid and the South African Human Rights Commission reported that corrective rape is a serious problem. However, not many people know of the severity of this issue. If this issue is left unsolved, many women will have to suffer and get no compensations for just being lesbian.
As a KMLA student, I felt that there is a need to address this issue. To change the world, we need to given attention to the people who are neglected and help them. I am ready to post more writings regarding this issue and let everybody know about it.
